ABOUT THE SHOW

Middle school, ugh. It’s the worst. But Greg is determined not to be at the bottom of the popularity chart. He’ll leave that to his weird neighbour, Fregley. Or maybe Greg’s best friend, Rowley Jefferson. But it’s not going to be Greg…no way.

In Diary of a Wimpy Kid, the Musical, Jeff Kinney’s popular character takes center stage as Greg’s cartoon diary becomes a hilarious and heartfelt musical. Will Greg’s plans to become popular lead him to sacrifice his one true friend? Can anyone avoid the dreaded Cheese Touch? Grab a hall pass and don’t be late for an adventure familiar to anyone who actually survived middle school.

"It's a buoyant and kind show... The script is funny, the pop-meets-Broadway songs are bouncy and clever."

- Star Tribune, Minneapolis

"Diary of a Wimpy Kid bounces onto the stage with confidence, energy and goodwill to spare... I don't think it's a stretch to say this show has charisma... It is a huge amount of fun."

DIARY OF A WIMPY KID is proudly presented

by THE SMITH & FREDRIKSEN FAMILIES!

StoryBook Theatre (SBT) is more than a venue—it’s a vibrant community where families across generations come together to enjoy the magic of live theatre. The Smith and Frederiksen Families deeply feel this sense of community. As shared by Melissa, the spokesperson for the families, their long-standing connection to SBT spans over 40 years, when Melissa’s parents, Jewel and Greg, started taking her to productions at SBT’s original stage at The Pumphouse Theatre. Their family’s story is a testament to the enduring power of live theatre, where generations come together to experience both StoryBook’s engaging performances and life-changing opportunities.

STB was the first live theater experience for Melissa and sparked a life-long interest in the performing arts.  As soon as her child Alex was old enough, Melissa began taking them first to StoryBook’s enchanting Cookie Cabaret shows, then to full-scale productions, sharing those early moments of wonder. For many years since, the family has been season ticket holders, ensuring they never miss out on the heartwarming stories and thrilling performances SBT brings to life. As Alex got older, they also began participating in SBT’s theater school programming and also performed in SBT’s SSIP productions of Pippin and Heathers.  For Alex StoryBook has provided an inclusive, welcoming space, where friendships and a sense of belonging were found. SBT became a second home, one of inclusion and inspiration.

As SBT had played such an important part in three generations of their families’ lives, the Smith and Frederiksen families have made it a priority to support SBT over the years, both through donations and by volunteering with SBT. Melissa’s time on the board of directors not only allowed her to give back to StoryBook but also connected her to the incredible community that makes SBT so unique. It was more than just volunteering; it was joining a family that, like the characters on stage, is full of creativity, dedication, and a shared love for storytelling.

SBT’s Season 48 theme, “Season to Belong,” resonated deeply with the Smith and Frederiksen families, as they believe SBT not only provides important access to theater for families in the Calgary community, but also creates a safe and inclusive community of belonging for all of its members.  As a result, they made the decision to increase their support of SBT by becoming show sponsors for Diary of a Wimpy Kid, as they believe its themes of navigating social challenges and finding your place in the world are increasingly relevant and important, as young adults work to navigate an increasingly complicated world. It was a story that resonated with their kids, parents, and grandparents alike.

StoryBook Theatre would like to thank the Smith and Frederiksen families for their generous support, which will help create a future where more families can find a home, where everyone BELONGS.

Why YOU Should Consider Sponsorship

Sponsoring a production at StoryBook Theatre is more than just supporting the arts—it’s about fostering a community where people of all ages can find a sense of belonging. For families like the Smiths and Frederiksens, SBT has been a space where meaningful connections are made, and where kids, teens, and adults can see themselves reflected in the stories on stage. Your sponsorship is not just a financial contribution but a personal investment in the future of everyone involved in our organization.

If you’re looking for a way to give back and make a difference, please consider joining StoryBook’s family of sponsors. Your support can help create meaningful spaces where every generation can find their voice, their community, and their home—just like the Smith and Frederiksen families have. Sponsoring is not just an investment in the arts but a vital contribution to creating a safe, supportive environment where everyone who steps through SBT’s doors can find their place to BELONG.
